Salvation And The Word Of God–Part 1

1 Corinthians 1:21–It pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.

It is by God’s design and according to His will that people are saved through hearing His word.  And it brings Him great pleasure.  It brings great pleasure to God when people hear His word preached, believe and are saved.  There is joy in heaven, in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents (Luke 15:7, 10).  The presentation of His word is the method God chose to bring salvation to believers.  For those who require a sign, the preaching of Christ crucified is a stumbling block.  For those who seek wisdom, the preaching of Christ crucified is foolishness.  For those who believe and are saved it is the power of God and the wisdom of God.  The power of God and the wisdom of God are operative when the word of God is presented and believed.  James 1:18-21–“Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth… receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls”.

The word of God is as a seed that is planted in the heart of the hearer.  When the word of God is shared, there are different results, depending on the person who receives it.  People sitting in a worship service can hear the message that is preached and leave having experienced something different.  One can say, “That was the best message I have ever heard” and another can say, “It was boring, or, it didn’t do anything for me”.  Jesus revealed this in the parable of the Seed and the Sower as found in Matthew 13:3-9; 18-23 and in Luke 8:4-15.  In this parable Jesus says that the seed is the word of God and there are four kinds of hearers.  We will examine this parable in tomorrow’s entry.  Jesus said, “He that hath ears to hear, let him hear” (Matthew 11:15).
