The Word Of God

Hebrews 4:12–For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

The word of God is quick–it is living.  It is alive, spiritually active and full of potential.  Jesus said, “The words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life“ (John 6:63).

The word of God is powerful–it is full of power, effective, having the power to bring about results.  It will accomplish that which God purposes and will prosper in the thing for which God sends it (Isaiah 53:11).

The word of God is sharper than any two-edged sword.  In fact the word of God is the spiritual sword of the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 6:17).  A physical sword is only capable of piercing and dividing that which is physical.  This sword has unlimited power not only in the physical realm but also in the spiritual realm.  It can pierce and penetrate throughout, even to the separating of the soul and spirit.  The soul being that part of us that consists of our mind, our will, and our emotions which are part of the flesh.  The spirit being that part of us that makes us God-conscious and where we communicate with God.  As scripture says, His Spirit bears witness with our spirit that we are the children of God” (Romans 8:16).  The Holy Spirit takes the word of God and separates the soul from the spirit.

The word of God is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. It examines and perceives our inward thoughts and reasonings distinguishing their difference; meaning whether they are from the soul or the spirit.  It also examines and perceives our innermost purposes and intentions that are based on our inward thoughts and reasonings.  The word of God acts as a spiritual mirror revealing the origin of our thoughts and intents and what manner of person we are (James 1:23-24).  It is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path.  It is up to us then to decide to follow the flesh or the spirit.  In this way God directs our lives with His word.
