The Heart Revealed

Matthew 12:34–Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.

The heart is revealed by the mouth–Abundance is an exceeding measure or something above the ordinary.  A person’s heart is full of many things but what abides there in abundance will be revealed through the mouth.  It will be revealed by what they say or in the manner in which they say it.  Let a person talk long enough and it will be revealed.  “The tongue can no man tame” (James 3:8).  All of us carry mixed messages through our tongues.  We express good things as well as bad things.  We express positive things as well as negative things.  Listen carefully to the habitual pattern of words that comes from a person’s mouth.  Listen to the unpremeditated or unrehearsed words, the spontaneous words that come forth, and you will behold the heart of the person.

The heart is revealed by our deeds–Many times a person will say one thing but do another.  Therefore to know the heart of a person we must use our eyes as well as our ears.  The heart is like a storehouse; a place where things are kept.  A good person out of the storehouse of their heart will bring forth good deeds.  An evil person out of the storehouse of their heart will bring forth evil things. All of us are capable of good or evil.  Therefore we must examine the habitual pattern of deeds that a person does. Are their deeds habitually good or habitually bad?  Jesus said, “By their fruits ye shall know them” (Mathew 7:20).
