The Scriptures Were Written For Us

Romans 15:4–Whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.

Whatsoever things were written aforetime–These things were written under the revelation and inspiration of the Holy Spirit.  “Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.  For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost” (2 Peter 1:20-21).

Were written for our learning–God had those things written for us.  They were written for our learning to teach us and instruct us.  They were written that we might have patience to persevere.  They were written that we might be comforted.  Seeing what those of the Bible went through and how they went through can give us this patience and comfort us when we are going through some difficult times.  Those scriptures reveal how God was with His people and how He worked to help them.  We see how God led His people and supplied their needs.  We see how God protected them in their troubles.  We see how God instructed them and guided them.  This produces in us patience and comforts us because we know that God is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow.  He will work in our life as He did in the lives of those mentioned in the Bible.

That we might have hope–Through the patience and comfort we receive from the scriptures we can have hope and that hope is in the one true God.  That hope is in the reality that He will be with us forever and will not forsake us to the things that we have to face in this life because He said so.
