Fight A Good Fight, Finish The Course, Keep The Faith

2 Timothy 4:7-8–I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.

Paul has come to the end of his life here on the earth.  He said, “I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand” (2 Timothy 4:6). His being ready is defined by the next two verses.

I have fought a good fight–Every Christian has his or her fight.  We have to contend with the flesh, the world, and the devil.  We are engaged in a spiritual warfare.  We must fight a good fight in our struggle with these.  We must live our life as God would have us to live it and where He has placed us.  We can be victorious because greater is He that is in us than he that is in the world.  We can do all things through Christ who strengthens us.

I have finished my course–Each of us has our own course that is set before us.  In the past we walked according to the course of this world, but when we got saved God put us on a new course.  In Hebrews 12:1 Paul referred to it as a race. We are to lay aside every weight and every sin that would hinder us in completing our race in victory.  We must finish the course that has been set before us.

I have kept the faith–Keeping the faith means that we guard it and hold on to it no matter what comes our way. Keeping the faith also includes the defending the word of God and obedience to it.

The crown of righteousness– This is the victor’s crown.  It is given to those who successfully complete the course that is set before them, to those who have fought the good fight and have kept their faith.  This crown is given by the Lord Himself.  What an honor this will be.
