Happiness Is Doing

John 13:17 “If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them.”
Jesus had just washed the feet of the disciples. He told them, “If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you” (John 13:14-15). He was not talking about feet washing. He was talking about ministering to one another.
If you know these things. Knowledge is not enough. With knowledge comes responsibility and accountability. “Unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required” (Luke 12:48). The more knowledge we receive the more is expected of us.
Happy are you if you do them. Happiness is found in doing the things that we know. Happiness comes in ministering to the needs of others. The more it is unexpected and undeserved the greater the happiness. It is in this that we become more like God for these are acts of grace. Jesus said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35).
The other side of the coin. “To him that knows to do good, and does it not, to him it is sin” (James 4:17). When people think about sin they usually think about the things that are done that should not have been done. These are sins of commission. However, sin also includes the things that we should have done and didn’t. These are sins of omission.
