Learning To Feed Our self

Matthew 4:4 “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.”

Learning to feed our self is a part of growing spiritually. I speak of feeding our self the word of God. As we already learned, the word of God is spiritual food and provides spiritual nourishment. Learning to feed our self comes from practice. We must spend time in the word of God; reading it, studying it, and memorizing it. We must seek God’s help by asking him to open the eyes of our understanding to teach us, and guide us into all truth.

Have you ever watched a baby learning to feed itself? It makes a mess and often resists help. The truth is, in order to get enough of the food the baby must accept the help and allow the adult to assist them. The babe in Christ (new Christian), in the beginning, needs the help of the more mature Christians. They need to be taught how to feed themselves. There are books on this subject and people within our churches who can help the new Christian to learn how to receive the spiritual nourishment that comes from God’s word. Read a portion of Scripture. Meditate on it. Seek an understanding of what God is saying. Examine the context of the scriptures to see how it fits into what is said before it and after it. Read the scripture over and over again emphasizing a different word each time. Realize that behind the written word there is the spirit of the word. Realize that behind the word of God there is the Spirit of God who inspired it, oversaw the writing of it, and reveals its meaning. Search the cross-references to compare spiritual with spiritual and to see how this portion of scripture fits in with other scriptures. The scriptures are like pieces of a puzzle; the more pieces of the puzzle you put in the proper place the clearer you see the picture. The more pieces of God’s Word you put in the proper place with other scriptures the clearer your understanding of God’s word will be.

God watches over our struggle like an adult watches over a child putting a puzzle together. Seeing the struggle we are having He offers clues and direction (through His Spirit) so we can put the pieces of His word in the right place. The major thing that we have going for us is, that it is God’s desire for us to understand His word. It is His message to us and He wants to make sure that we understand what He has said. Therefore He places His Spirit, the Spirit of truth, within us to teach us all things, bring to our remembrance what He has said unto us, and to guide us into all truth. Jesus once said, “If any man will do His will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself” John 7:17. If we seek to do His will, God will help us know His doctrine. Learning to feed ourselves is a natural part of spiritual growth.
