Combined Prayer

Matthew 18:19-20: “I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.”

If two of you shall agree: This means they have talked it over, sought God’s will, and come to a conclusion.

As touching anything that they shall ask: Their discussion and the seeking of God’s will is in order to pray about a particular matter. Combined prayer done in agreement has an added power.

It shall be done for them: The Father which is in heaven will answer the prayer.

For where two or three are gathered in my name: For expresses the reason for the power of such prayer. The first reason is the gathering in His name. In my name includes the oneness of their faith in and relationship to Jesus.

There am I in the midst of them: This expresses the second reason for the effectiveness of such prayer. Jesus is in their midst and as they seek God’s will He is guiding them. Whenever two or three Christians are gathered together in this way, Jesus is there. This is His promise.
