Treasure In Earthen Vessels

2 Corinthians 4:7: “We have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.”

We have this treasure in earthen vessels: The earthen vessels are Christians, and is a reference to our earthly bodies. This treasure is priceless and is a gift from God. This treasure is the Holy Spirit. We have become partakers of the divine nature of God. He dwells in us.

  • First this treasure is for our benefit. He has come to teach us and guide us into all truth. He has come to renew our minds and transform our lives. He has come to manifest the character of God (the fruit of the Spirit) through us. He has come to empower us to have victory over sin and the devil. He has come to empower us for ministry.
  • Secondly, He has come that we might be used to reach out to others through ministry. This is where the gifts of the spirit come in. Jesus said, “He that believes on me, as the scripture have said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. (But this spake He of the Spirit, which they that believe on Him should receive.)” (John 7:38-39).

That the excellency of the power may be of God: The Holy Spirit dwells in us that the superiority of God’s power might work through us as we walk in the Spirit and are yielded to Him. “It is the spirit that quickens; the flesh profits nothing” (John 6:63). God is working in us both to will and to do of His good pleasure. The Holy Spirit who dwells in us works through us to accomplish what we could never do on our own.

Let us get to know Him intimately so that we might be used by God in a great way. As we yield to the Holy Spirit He will manifest Himself through us in words and in deeds.
