A Continuing City

Hebrews 13:14: “Here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come.”

Here we have no continuing city: Nothing in this physical world continues. Everything is temporal. Even our physical life is as “a vapor that appears for a little time, and then vanishes away” (James 4:14). People move from city to city and again we have no continuing city.

But we seek one to come: ”For our citizenship is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ” (Philippians 3:20). The Greek word for conversation here speaks of our citizenship. Our citizenship is in heaven. Abraham “looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God” (Hebrews 11:10). This is the city that we seek and is to come. “God has prepared for them a city” (Hebrews 11:16). The city we are seeking is in heaven whose builder and maker is God. John said, “I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband” (Revelation 21:2). John saw this city, the holy Jerusalem and it was gloriously beautiful, decked out in all of its splendor. This is the city that we seek. It is the eternal city of God filled with all the glory of God Himself.
