Fellowship and Cleansing

1 John 1:7: “If we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanses us from all sin.”

If we walk in the light, as he is in the light: The word “if” expresses the possibility that some might not walk in this light. Some Christians walk in the flesh and not in the Spirit. To walk in the light is to walk in the Spirit and in the light of God’s word which is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path. To walk is to live our lives according to the Spirit and God’s word. Then we can experience the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace (Ephesians 4:3). Jesus said, “I am the light of the world: he that follows me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life” (John 8:12). To walk in the light is to follow Jesus who is not only in the light but is THELight.

We have fellowship one with another: The Bible says, “Can two walk together, except they be agreed?” (Amos 3:3). If we are to have fellowship we have to be in agreement with each other in the way we believe and live. If one is walking in the flesh and the other is walking in the Spirit there can be no fellowship “for the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other” (Galatians 5:17). Therefore these two people will be contrary the one to the other and not able to have fellowship.

And the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin: As the hymn says, “What can wash away my sin, nothing but the blood of Jesus”. It cleanses us from ALL sin and brings us into fellowship with God and with one another. Walking in the light brings us to the cleansing blood of Jesus.
