Have A Good Conscience

1 Peter 3:16-17: “Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ. For it is better, if the will of God be so, that you suffer for well doing, than for evil doing.”

Having a good conscience: We are to maintain a good conscience toward God by conducting ourselves in a way that is pleasing to God through our obedience to Him.

Whereas they speak evil of you: When others speak evil of us and falsely accuse us we are to follow the instructions of Jesus as found in Matthew 5:44. “I say unto you, love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despite-fully use you, and persecute you”. We are also told, “Recompense to no man evil for evil” (Romans 12:17). And again, “See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men” (1 Thessalonians 5:1). “Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing” (1 Peter 3:9). We are not to be overcome by the evil of others and walk according to their ways, but we are to overcome evil with good and maintain our walk with God. In following the instruction of God we shall indeed inherit a blessing and maintain a good conscience.

It is better that we suffer for doing good, rather than for doing evil.
