God’s Thoughts and God’s Ways

Isaiah 55:8: “My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, says the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.”

My thoughts are not your thoughts: This is especially true of the unsaved and the carnal Christian. They tend to think the same and have the same thoughts. “The carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God” (Romans 8:7-8). To be carnally minded is to mind the things of the flesh instead of the things of the Spirit. To be carnal is to live ones life according to the flesh and to be controlled by and governed by the human nature instead of the Spirit of God. Even a spiritual Christian must remember that God’s thoughts are not his thoughts. When seeking direction for our lives we must keep this in mind. We must seek God’s will and direction for our lives with our mind open to God.

Your ways are not my ways: The way God directs us to do things may be very different than the way we would do them. Here again we must be open to God and wait on Him to reveal how He wants us to do things.

As the heavens are higher than the earth: The difference between God’s ways and His thoughts and our ways and our thoughts is as great as the height of the heavens above the earth. God desires to share His thoughts and ways with us and lift us up to a higher plane in our thoughts and our ways. He wants us to examine our situations and circumstances and be directed by His thoughts and ways. Our minds are to be renewed by the Holy Spirit and our lives thus transformed (Romans 12:2). We are to have the mind of Christ (Philippians 2:5).

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart;
Lean not unto your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge him,
and He shall direct your paths.”
Proverbs 3:5-6
