Know the Truth

Jesus said, “If you continue in my word then are you my disciples indeed, and you shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free” John 8:31-32.

Continue in my word–My brothers and sisters we must continue in his word.  This means to continue to hear it, continue to believe it, and continue to obey it. Continue means to go on; day by day, week, by week, month by month, and year by year.  Continue to hear it—“faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God” Romans 10:17.  Yes, hearing the word of God when he speaks it to your heart will produce faith.  James said, “Be ye doers of the word and not hearers only deceiving yourself” James 1:22.  It is not enough to hear the word of God; we must be doers of it.  “Faith without works is dead being alone” James 2:20.  Faith in the word of God should impact our walk.  Yes, we should walk in accord with the word of God.  Noah was warned by God, he believed God, and he prepared an ark.   Hearing God’s warning would not have been enough.  Hearing God’s warning and believing it would not have been enough.  Preparing the ark was an expression of Noah’s belief that what God had said was going to happen.  Are you hearing his word?  Are you believing his word?  Are you being obedient by following his instruction?  As the old Hymn says, “Trust and obey, for there is no other way to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey”.

Then you are my disciples indeed–A disciple is one who has a teacher.  A disciple is one who is being taught.  A disciple is one who continues in the word of his teacher.  He hears what the teacher says, he believes what the teacher says, and he obeys the instruction of his teacher.  This is what makes a disciple.   Listen to him, believe him and obey his instruction and you will be his disciple indeed.

You shall know the truthmental knowledge comes from hearing God’s word of truth.  Spiritual knowledge comes as the Holy Spirit quickens the word of God and makes it come alive with meaning and purpose.  Jesus said when he was going away that he was going to send the Spirit of truth.  And Jesus said that the Spirit of truth would teach us all things and bring to our remembrance all he had said unto us.  He said that the Spirit of truth would guide us into all truth.  He opens the eyes of our understanding.  Experiential knowledge comes from obeying that truth.  It is activating God’s word in your life.  It is experiencing God’s word in your life and knowing the truth because of your experience.  God and his word become personal to you.

The truth shall set you free—the truth will set you free from the bondage of sin.  It will lead you to victory over the devil.  It will provide answers to your questions and guidance in the decisions that you need to make.   It will lift you from living life on a lower, physical level to living life on a higher, spiritual level.  It will renew your mind and transform your life.

God, we ask you to quicken your word to our hearts.  Help us to understand your word and rightly divide it.  Renew our minds and transform our lives.  Help us to walk in the light of your word.  Let your word be a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path that we may be your disciples indeed, knowing the truth and being set free.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen.
